You need to find ways – sometimes surprising or unusual ways – to break through the daily clutter and noise of a donor’s life. When they notice you, it can be a pleasant surprise.
Having a goal and a plan for every donor keeps you focused and accountable; and this will, more than likely, lead you to be successful.
Don’t force yourself on major donors – a respectful relationship with your donor starts with you knowing his interests and passions, then serving those interests in passions in the manner the donor directs.
You really should not do any prospecting as a major gift officer. You should only talk to people who have already agreed to support you – the thousands of good donors on your file.
As you plan your moves with a donor, ask yourself the following question: “Will this move get me closer to fulfilling this donor’s interests and passions?” If it will, keep going. If not, start over.
