“I wish I had never said that!”
Have you had this experience? You meander through life, find yourself in a meeting or an encounter with someone and then, wham! you say something stupid.
I have done it way more times than I would like to admit. And most of the time I have been able to recover, apologize and secure forgiveness for my impulsive, ignorant words. But sometimes those words have cut too deep or bruised too much, and I have watched a good relationship go cold and distant.
If you are honest, you have been caught in the same trap. We all have. It is part of the human condition. Jeff and I see this pattern of saying stupid and hurtful things as being driven by one or more of these three situations:
- The person had an errant thought that just popped out of their mouth before reason and logic could check it.
- The person is truly ignorant about the facts and context of the topic they are erroneously commenting on.
- The person knows all the facts and context of the topic, yet chooses to state an opposing view.
So now let’s say you are with a donor and one of these off-putting statements pops out of their mouth. What should you do?
Jeff and I have talked quite a bit about this, and we have concluded that a MGO should apply the same rule to a donor in this situation that we ourselves apply in our relationships with each other, our colleagues, partners and spouses. Here it is:
When a donor says something that is off-putting or ignorant, you should receive the statement with compassion and benefit of the doubt. Why? Because more often than not, the donor either did not mean to say it (situation #1 above) or they really do not know the facts (situation #2 above).
My spouse has played a major role in my life in helping me appreciate, value and practice many of the nuances of diversity. Even though I grew up in South America and should know better, along the path of life I accumulated prejudice and information that was wrong. I was ignorant.
But if you know me now, you know that I care deeply about others, and I truly value what diversity means. I was ignorant. What I needed in my life was a compassionate guide – not someone who would hammer me every time I said the wrong thing. And because my spouse has guided me with kindness and compassion I have changed into a different person. Now to be clear, that kindness and compassion was firm, not “hey Richard, you can think and say whatever you want.”
This is true of most donors. They just do not know all the nuances and details of your work, like why people are poor, what are the root causes of injustice, what are the systems in our world that hurt people, what are the beliefs that go counter to values that they hold deeply. The list can go on for a long time.
In every cause of every non-profit, no matter the sector, there is ignorance. A ton of it. And what most donors need is compassionate enlightenment, not judgment and immediate correction.
So when your donor says something that you know is just wrong, Jeff and I suggest the following way to deal with it:
- Hold your response. Hold it – do not, under any circumstance, jump in and start the debate. Watch your body language. Hold your response.
- Compassionately assume that the comment came from lack of information, not from prejudice or bias. This will be hard to do because you are feeling put off by the comment. But try to be compassionate.
- Ask a question. When the time is right, ask the donor the following question: “NAME, do you mind if I tell you a story that is related to what you just said?” After gaining permission, then…
- Tell a story that frames the facts and your knowledge of the issue. Right here is where things can go terribly wrong. This is where, if you are defensive and just need to MAKE YOUR POINT, you will bruise the relationship. Don’t do this. Instead, humanize and personalize the issue. Tell a story about a person or a situation that helps the donor emotionally connect to the issue. This will create empathy and compassion in even the hardest of hearts. Sometimes it won’t, because situation #3 above may be operational – the donor may know the facts and still take a contrarian position. In this case…
- Tell the story anyway, and then respectfully disagree. Remember, it is not your job to remake donors in your image. So, you tell the story and then say: “NAME, I can see that we don’t agree on this. And that’s OK. I hope that this won’t make a difference in your support of our organization. There is so much more we do agree on.” And then you move on. No need to get an attitude about the donor, or slide into a professional pout. Just disagree respectfully and move on.
Professional and personal life is just this way. People will say stuff out of ignorance – either true ignorance or ignorance driven by prejudice and bias. It is always best to believe and act in a way that is compassionate and kind. Try it. You will be surprised at how effective it is.
Also, remember that your job is not to remake the donor at any cost. Your job is to serve a donor’s passions and interests with enthusiasm, integrity and confidence. Stay positive and constructive, and you will be amazed at the good things that happen.

Great post Richard. I have seen an alarming trend over the past 5 or 6 years where fundraisers and other non-profit staff want to debate their donors and prospects about political issues. This is a huge mistake (how many people will go hungry if the food pantry Development Director wants to debate every donor who is against increases in welfare spending… donors who are voluntarily making huge gifts to a food pantry? Yet I have seen it happen).
This doesn’t mean that you as a fundraiser aren’t entitled to your opinions – you are. But as Richard says here, (1) give everyone the benefit of the doubt, (2) be respectful of your donors, and (3) don’t pontificate or try to debate. I would add a fourth rule as well – don’t talk politics with your donors, particularly outside of the mission of your non-profit. I have seen two large non-profits lose major donors over the past year because fundraising staff made belittling comments to the donors after finding out the donors were Trump supporters. In one case, a major patron of the arts decided to give elsewhere because a staff member mocked the donor, to her face, about her political leanings. What a mistake!
I was a major donor to a nonprofit. I expressed an interest in participating and becoming involved in the organization to see how my donations were being utilized. However, I was told that there were no opportunities for me on any board or committee because I wasn’t qualified. Nobody even asked about my credentials to consider my qualifications. The executive director was very rude and unprofessional in her response to me. I asked about their financial documents because I wanted transparency. I received a letter from a board member/ attorney who accused me of harassment. Even though I had an agreement with them, I told them by certified letter that I didn’t trust them and would take my donations elsewhere. That was almost 4 months ago and didn’t get a reply back. Unbelievable!!!
