This is event season. Because of that, Richard and I have been asked by a number of development professionals about how you turn an event donor who gives a major gift into an actual major donor who is inspired by your mission.
The answer is that it’s almost impossible
Often, the reason the major gifts function in an organization does not work is because the organization itself is not organized properly. Or the leaders in the organization don’t have a clear view of what the various functions in the organization are supposed to do.
Events, if done right, are filled with emotion around your mission. Your major gift donors and prospects will carry that emotion with them once they leave, but you have very little time to take the emotion of that event and connect with them in a way that deepens your relationship.
